Most guides to IPTV players stop at the picture. But a lot of watching is really listening: a match on in the car, a news channel while you cook, talk radio on your headphones on the walk to work. What a media session actually is
On Android, a media session is the standard way an app tells the rest of the system, "I am playing something, and here is how to control it." Once an app publishes one, the operating system can surface real controls in places the app does not draw itself:
- the lock screen and the notification shade,
- Bluetooth headphones and speakers, with their hardware buttons,
- a car head unit over Bluetooth, and Android Auto,
- smartwatches and other companion devices.
The difference is stark. An app with no media session can still make sound over Bluetooth, because Android routes all audio there anyway. But press the pause button on your headphones and nothing happens, because there is no session listening for it. An app with a media session hands those buttons a job. Play, pause, and skip do what you expect, from a device that is nowhere near the screen.

Android Auto
If your car runs Android Auto, the lock-screen-style controls appear on the car display too. Keep to radio mode here: you want audio, not a video you should not be looking at while driving. Treat live TV in the car as radio with a schedule, which for sports commentary and news is often exactly what you want.
A safety note worth stating plainly: video belongs on a parked screen. The value in the car is the sound.
On the lock screen and notifications
Even without Bluetooth, the media session earns its keep on the phone itself.
